Cultivating Compassion in a World on Fire
Over 2,600 years ago, the Buddha taught that this world is on fire with greed, ill-will and confusion. In response, the Buddha suggested the cultivation of compassion as a “medicine” that protects and heals the mind and heart.
Presently, as the forces of greed, ill-will and dire confusion are being unleashed in whirlwinds of increasing chaos – we may be waking up to feeling overwhelmed, disoriented and threatened by the fear that our dreams may dissolve away into a nightmare of a world wrought with great suffering.
Cultivating the saving grace of compassion:
- Is essential to our individual and collective mental health
- Relaxes fear and aversion that may, unknowingly, cause grasping at the memory of a norm – to try to combat fear and stress in the face of change and uncertainty
- Protects from falling into the state of despair, with the fear of being crushed, broken and shattered when facing the unknown
- Strengthens the courage to let the precious body breathe, resulting in activating the inner qualities of resilience, patience and perseverance in life and living
- Engenders faith and confidence in our capacity to maintain presence of mind, and a calm, buoyant spirit, while navigating our way during difficult times
- Gently opens the heart, like a flower, to live in peace and forgiveness with that which we can not be controlled or changed
“Compassion is by nature gentle, kind, peaceful and soft, but is very powerful, for it enables us to overcome fear and negativity. Without it, humanity will not survive. The cultivation of compassion is a fundamental requirement for our collective survival.”
Dalai Lama
